Dunure

Dominating the settlement are the ruins of Dunure Castle, notorious as the site of the roasting of Alan Stewart, the Commendator of Crossraguel (pron. Kross-raygle) Abbey by supporters of the Earl of Cassillis (pron. castles).  

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the renowned Glasgow architect and designer, spent time here with his fellow architect, John Keppie, and their artist friends. Close by the castle is a rare, 16th century, beehive-shaped dovecote (Scots: doocot) and a little further on is a relic of 18th century farm improvement – a large, but now redundant, limekiln. The picturesque aspect of the harbour has been the scene of filming for the highly-successful TV series ‘Outlander’.
