Although now a small village it would have been a place of some importance in times past as indicated by the remains of three tower-houses in the vicinity.

The oldest, Craigneil, dates from either the 14th or 15th century. It is a simple, rectangular tower with walls six feet thick. The other two tower-houses were built in the 16th century. Knockdolian was probably built for the Graham family. Sir John Grahame of Knockdolian was married to Dame Helen Kennedy, eldest daughter of Thomas Kennedy, elder,of Bargany. Kirkhill tower-house carries the date 1589 on the cill of one of its large windows. It is L-shaped on plan with a stair tower attached to one of the corners of the main block.
