Kirkoswald, a village 4 miles south-west of Maybole, is named for Oswald, the 7th century King of Northumbria.

He was venerated as a saint in the Middle Ages. The kirkyard around the ruins of the former parish church (possibly 16th c.) contains a number of interesting carved, 17th and 18th c. tombstones. The replacement for the old kirk is situated above the village and dates from the late 18th century. It is believed to have been designed by the neo-classical architect, Robert Adam.
